It has been 30 years after the original Toy Story movie was released, launching the animation giant as a leading animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like Woody (the actor) and Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen), who are now famous worldwide.

In 2026, the fifth installment is set to arrive. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, providing a brief look into the storyline but keeping viewers wondering how it will resolve the conclusion of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

In the teaser shows the young girl — who inherited the toy collection when he left for college — getting a latest toy, one that terrifies Woody, Buzz, and the crew. She gets her initial digital gadget, and she is excited about it.

Presumably, the frog-shaped tablet will animate just like the rest of her playthings. Still, the characters appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser avoids is why the sheriff is returned with his companions in Bonnie's room. The finale of Toy Story 4 saw him set off on a new adventure with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a carnival and helping giveaway items find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is Duke Caboom (the star)?

Connections from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some aspects are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his new life was hand over his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (the voice actor), entrusting her as the leader of the toy domain. In the teaser shows the badge pinned to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the driving force among the toys.
