Users Discontinuing Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research reveals that people who come off new slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such medications should be informed of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass in about a year and a half.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.

GLP-1 drugs copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Accounts

People who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, researchers stress that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss relies on combined lifestyle support.
